"Hold These Up"
Shortly after starting to paint, I had a dream. In the dream, Dawn Grows knocked on the door. When I opened the door she instructed me to hold these up—two triangular canvases of mine. One was a desert scene with a sphere at the apex. The other was Pegasus bringing striations of color as he descended from a sphere suspended in perfect peace in the distance. I held up a canvas. Feeling a rush of power, I woke, terrified.
From this beginning, the Universe gave me a commission to paint. The power in the dream is the energy of light and love that moves through me into the world via my paintings. The real work is that moment of creation, the interface between the seen and unseen. It's about energy!
I had the great fortune of studying with Cong Yuan and Jane Filer. Cong Yuan encouraged the work to become authentically my own. He recognized an effortless ability to express strong emotion even while developing technical skills with the human figure. With Filer, I gained an understanding of how to create images from chaos and color.
